What is a darter?
Darters are non-game fish that are native to North
America and live at the bottom of freshwater lakes and
streams. They live at the bottom because, as a group, darters
have poorly developed swim-bladders (the organs that make fish float).
Most darters max-out at three inches in size, making them the
perfect size for any aquarium. They are also great community fish
- they won't disturb your other tank inhabitants.
In the wild, darters eat a variety of foods ranging from
aquatic insects and worms to snails and juvenile fish. In the
home aquarium, however, they gladly consume live or frozen food
that can be easily acquired at almost any pet store.
